It’s hot, muggy, and miserable outside. And there’s nothing new on TV. (Unless of course you’re into watching has-been celebrities fly the trapeze or annoyingly chipper people conquer ridiculous outdoor obstacle courses).
If you’re too lazy for a trip to the movie theater, too tired to pick up a book, and you’ve already rented every possible DVD at Blockbuster (admit it: you sorta liked 27 Dresses), why not spend the week, the weekend, or the month catching up on the television shows you haven’t been (but should be) watching?
Rent or buy the season(s) of these small-screen successes. We guarantee you’ll happily be sucked right back into the boob tube trap. Except this time you won’t be humming those annoying commercial jingles for days to come.
Californication
David Duchovny is sexy. He’s not your conventional hottie. But he wins serious points as a thrill-seeking, sex-loving, womanizing “divorcee” (he was never legally married,) with bad habits and serious baggage. He drinks in excess, curses like a sailor, and over indulges in other “naughty” (slash illegal) behavior, but we still see him as the doting father, the scorned author, and the love of his ex-wife’s life. Root for him, cringe at him, and just plain ogle him as he hops from bed to bed on a journey to pick up the pieces.
Weeds
Two reasons to watch Weeds: Mary Louise Parker and Elizabeth Perkins. These two talented leading ladies kick some ass in this high-on-life (and pot!) program. What’s not to love about a suburban mom turned marijuana dealer? Nancy (Parker) struggles to balance it all: succeeding at her new controversial career, raising her 10-year-old son, and keeping her shady life under wraps. It’s funny, heartfelt, and hilarious.
Mad Men
Don’t get turned off by the retro fashion and old-school feel of this AMC show set in the 1960s.
Mad Men has it all: vintage glamour, sex appeal, and serious drama. The series revolves around Don Draper, a suave, successful ad man and ladies man. We are privy to his titillating tactics in the boardroom and the bedroom. The show has brains, brawn, and means business.
The Closer
This is not your typical good-cop, bad-cop, chase-down the bad guy and put him behind bars show. Kyra Sedgwick plays a sweet talkin’, Southern belle who can coach a confession from anyone, anywhere, at any time. She’s the perfect blend of quirky and cute, sweet and mean, soft and hard as nails.
Dexter
A seemingly friendly police forensics expert just happens to also be a serial killer. Dexter has always had an obsession with murder. But he’s learned to discipline his psychopathic tendencies and curb his lust-for-a-kill. The blood-thirsty nice-guy targets criminals who he thinks have escaped justice. It’s gory, bloody, and a little over the top, but this is one really, really bad guy you’ll actually root for.
